About OhsaaBasketball
An independent desk on how basketball's rules are actually applied — written from the officials' side of the whistle.
What we publish
OhsaaBasketball explains how basketball’s written rules get applied in a live game. Not the abstract rule — the judgement. What the rulebook says, what an official is trained to look at, what makes the difference between a legal step and a travel, and where the common explanations get it wrong.
That covers three things: the rules and specifications of the game, specific situations readers send in, and the mechanics of officiating — positioning, rotation and crew responsibility.
Why this domain
From roughly 2013 to 2018 this domain served the Ohio basketball officiating community, carrying rules interpretations and mechanics guidance written by working officials for other officials.
That site went offline and the domain later lapsed. We acquired it, removed the unrelated material published on it in the interim, and restored the officiating pages that were worth keeping, with their original publication dates and author credit intact.
We publish new work alongside them. Older pages are not a substitute for the current rulebook, and they say so.
Independence
We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or a publication of the Ohio High School Athletic Association, the Ohio Association of Basketball Officials, or the National Federation of State High School Associations. We are not a registered officials’ association and we do not certify, train, assign or evaluate officials.
Nobody on this site claims to be a licensed or registered official of any state association. Where a page carries a 2013–2018 byline, that credit belongs to the original author of that page and describes their role at the time of writing, not a current relationship with us.
Rule references here are editorial summaries. They are not a substitute for the current NFHS rulebook or your own state association’s published rules and interpretations, which are the only authoritative sources for a game you are actually working.
